Casalasco: Beyond the Supply Chain

Not just the tomato supply chain: Casalasco also prioritizes responsible supply chains for external sourcing.

News

In the production of tomato-based products for its own brands and for its business partners, Casalasco can rely on a unique resource: the integrated supply chain that goes from field to shelf.

The Consortium's farmers ensure the production of quality tomatoes, despite recent years being characterized by conditions far from favorable for the agricultural sector, from the energy crisis to the growing problem of drought.

But Casalasco's tomato supply chain is not just a guarantee of supply regularity and quantity. It is a completely Italian supply chain, which stands out for its high standards of safety and organoleptic quality of the finished product.

Choosing Casalasco tomatoes means leveraging the expertise and experience of those who have been working at the highest levels for years in their own production and for third-party business partners, thanks to constant research in agronomy and a cutting-edge R&D department to guarantee excellent quality products.

Casalasco's supply chain also ensures respect for the environment and fairness to all workers involved in the various stages of processing. This commitment also extends to suppliers.

Casalasco therefore prioritizes responsible supply chains, including external sourcing, for example, in the choice of packaging and externally purchased raw materials, aiming for the 360° development of a sustainable supply chain that contributes to generating shared and widespread value among all actors in the supply chain.

The ultimate goal is to create positive returns not only economically, but also socially and environmentally within the local Italian community and within the communities where all partners operate.

For example:

Basil supply chain

In 2021, Casalasco obtained the certification according to the ISCC Plus International Sustainability & Carbon Certification standard for the basil supply chain.

The ISCC Plus Standard requirements include sustainable cultivation management, the implementation of environmental, social, and ecological sustainability criteria, the sourcing of raw materials deforestation-free, refraining from converting high-biodiversity areas and protecting them, the traceability in the supply and processing chains of biomass, finished and intermediate products, and compliance with sustainability criteria throughout the entire chain of delivery and processing, from biomass to finished products.

In 2021, Casalasco purchased 40 tons of basil from an ISCC-certified supply chain for the preparation of pestos and sauces made for a major client.

RSPO Palm Oil

For the production of some products containing palm oil, Casalasco has chosen a supply chain certified by RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil).

Irresponsible oil palm cultivation, in fact, leads to a severe environmental impact on tropical forests, which suffer massive deforestation, resulting in biodiversity loss, increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and hydrogeological instability in the territories.

RSPO certification is the leading international sustainability standard for oil palm cultivation: certified producers produce palm oil without harming biodiversity and while respecting local communities.

FSC-certified paper

Casalasco also chooses increasingly sustainable solutions for its product packaging materials.

To package its products in cartons, it exclusively uses FSC-certified paper (Forest Stewardship Council), a product certification that attests the paper comes from renewable forests, responsibly managed according to rigorous environmental, social, and economic standards.

In 2021, more than 4.7 million kg of FSC-certified packaging were purchased.
